How to improve skin quality: a simple routine that works.

Skin quality is how clear, even and smooth your skin looks. The most reliable improvements come from a short routine done consistently: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer, daily sunscreen and, if suited to you, a gradually introduced retinoid. Hexum scores skin quality from your scan so you can track it.

The basic routine

  1. Gentle cleanser morning and night. Skip harsh scrubs, which can irritate skin.
  2. Moisturizer suited to your skin type, to support the skin barrier.
  3. Broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, every morning. Sun exposure is a major driver of uneven tone and early skin ageing.
  4. A retinoid at night (such as over-the-counter retinol or adapalene), started slowly.

Using a retinoid sensibly

  • Start with a small amount two or three nights a week, and build up as your skin tolerates it.
  • Expect some dryness at first, and use a moisturizer alongside it.
  • Results take time, commonly eight to twelve weeks or more.
  • Use sunscreen during the day, because retinoids can make skin more sun-sensitive.
  • Do not use retinoids if you are pregnant or planning to be without asking a doctor.

Habits that support skin

  • Sleep. Poor sleep is linked to dull skin and puffiness.
  • Not smoking. Smoking is strongly associated with premature skin ageing.
  • Sun protection. Sunscreen, shade and avoiding tanning.
  • A balanced diet. Evidence for specific foods is mixed, but overall diet matters for general health.
  • Do not pick at spots. It increases scarring and marks.

Acne and when to see a dermatologist

Mild acne often responds to over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or adapalene, used consistently for several weeks. See a dermatologist if acne is painful, scarring, spreading or not improving, or if you notice a mole or patch of skin that changes, bleeds or looks unusual.

How to tell whether it is working

Skin changes slowly, so judge it over weeks, not days. Take your scan in the same light each time. Hexum scores skin quality (texture, clarity and evenness) from your photo and includes skin work in the daily protocol when it is one of your weaker areas, so a rescan shows whether your score is moving.

Skin sits alongside the other metrics in our looksmaxxing guide for beginners. This page is general information, not medical advice.
